AbstractSUCCESSFUL EARLY PROGRAMS IN OFF-FARM AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION WERE ASSESSED IN THIS 2-PHASE PROJECT. THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PROJECT ASSESSED INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS AND PRACTICES THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE SUCCESS OF THESE PROGRAMS. QUESTIONNAIRES WERE DEVELOPED AND ADMINISTERED TO APPROPRIATE PERSONNEL OF TEN HIGH SCHOOLS HAVING PROGRAMS IN AGRICULTURAL BUSINESS, AGRICULTURAL MECHANIZATION, CONSERVATION, AND ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE. A NUMBER OF COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS WERE LISTED. THE SECOND PHASE OF THE PROJECT RELATED TO THE ARTICULATION OF THESE PROGRAMS ON THE SECONDARY LEVEL WITH SIMILAR POST-HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN THE AGRICULTURAL AND TECHNICAL COLLEGES. A SERIES OF CONFERENCES AND PERSONAL VISITS RESULTED IN A NUMBER OF FINDINGS WHICH POINTED TO THE NEED FOR GREATER ARTICULATION OF CURRICULUM OFFERINGS. THE INVESTIGATORS CONCLUDED THAT (1) THE NUMBER OF SPECIALIZED OFF-FARM AGRICULTURAL PROGRAMS WILL INCREASE AT BOTH THE HIGH SCHOOL AND POST-HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL AND (2) THE BEST USE OF EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES NECESSITATES CONTINUED DIALOG BETWEEN THE CONCERNED HIGH SCHOOL AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE PERSONNEL TO ACHIEVE A "TOTAL TEAM" APPROACH TO THE JOB OF PROVIDING OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION IN AGRICULTURE. ALL FEDERAL FUNDS FOR THIS CONTRACT WERE SUBCONTRACTED THROUGH THE BUREAU OF OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION, NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. (AL)
