AbstractTHE MAJOR OBJECTIVE WAS TO ASCERTAIN THE STATUS OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. THE STUDY INCLUDED ONLY PROGRAMS OPERATED IN PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS, FUNDED EITHER PARTIALLY OR FULLY BY THE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION ACT, PUBLIC LAW 88-210, AND DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE ACADEMIC, SOCIOECONOMIC, OR OTHER HANDICAPS THAT PREVENT THEM FROM SUCCEEDING IN REGULAR VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS. PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE LOW MENTAL CAPACITY AND REQUIRE A HIGH DEGREE OF ATTENTION BY SPECIALLY TRAINED SCHOOL PERSONNEL WERE EXCEPTED. OF THE 333 TEACHERS RECEIVING A SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE, 229 RESPONDED. HOWEVER, ONLY 79 QUESTIONNAIRES WERE USABLE BECAUSE OF THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY. THE PROGRAMS WERE SIMILAR TO THE REGULAR VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS. A MAJORITY WERE OPERATED FOR MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF DISADVANTAGED STUDENT AND THE CURRICULUMS WERE PLANNED AND ADAPTED TO THE STUDENTS' ABILITIES. THEY WERE OFTEN DESIGNED TO TRAIN THE STUDENT FOR EMPLOYMENT IN A BROAD SPECTRUM OF OCCUPATIONS RATHER THAN FOR A PARTICULAR SKILL. A NATIONAL SURVEY TO DETERMINE THE NUMBERS AND LOCATIONS OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND RESEARCH TO DETERMINE NUMBERS AND KINDS OF JOBS FOR WHICH STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS COULD BE TRAINED WERE RECOMMENDED.
