Abstract | In this work, I analyze the concept of "disciplinary cultures". The ideas of "culture" and "discipline", as employed in the social sciences and in recent higher education research, are elaborated in regard to the contrasting theories of Parsons and Bourdieu. The implications of these ideas are put to test by data from the encompassing empirical study "Studiensituation" (Situation of Higher Education Students) conducted by the "Arbeitsgruppe Hochschulforschung" (University of Konstanz, Germany). Methodologically, this study seeks to identify disciplinary cultures through a multitude of students orientations and experiences by using various types of cluster analysis. As predicted, teacher education came out as a clearly distinguishable disciplinary culture. However, a "culture of the natural sciences" could not be identified as unambiguously as one might expect. In general, the findings are more in line with Parsons theory than with Bourdieu s. |
