AbstractThe RWTH Aachen University has been developing a web-based self-assessment student guidance system since 2002. The programme is based on cognitive tests and non-cognitive questionnaires and has the long-term goal of increasing success rates ; in particular in Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering. This work provides information about the background to the development ; the construction of the test battery and technical implementation as well as empirical evidence regarding the quality of the test and acceptance by the participants. An extreme group comparison between interested Computer Sciences students and Humanities students was carried out to determine which components of the test battery were capable of differentiating between these groups. The non-cognitive questionnaires where then able to explain more variance in the correlation than was possible with the cognitive tests. In addition ; the validity of the test battery was also examined by means of a census of new Computer Sciences students at the RWTH Aachen University (n = 594) using two criteria: student grades and the number of exams passed. The cognitive test components (deltaR = 0,196) alone and a combination of the cognitive and non-cognitive components (deltaR = 0,291) demonstrated an incremental validity for predicting university grades from the Abitur (German high school graduation) grades (R = 0,304). The reported empirical basis will be used to form recommendations for the development and implementation of web-based student guidance systems as well as scholastic aptitude tests for student selection.
