Abstract	Theoretisch in Konzepte der beruflichen Bildung eingefügt und empirisch durch eine Befragung von Wandergesellen unterlegt, wird in der vorliegenden Untersuchung sowohl die historische als auch die heutige Walz hinsichtlich ihrer Funktionen für die berufliche Bildung beschrieben und analysiert. Die Walz oder Gesellenwanderung ist ein historisches Phänomen, das noch immer praktiziert wird. Trotz ihrer historischen Wurzeln fügt sie sich hochaktuell in Konzepte der beruflichen Bildung ein, die im Zuge von Europäisierung und Globalisierung zunehmend lebenslanges und informelles Lernen fordern und erweiterte berufliche Kompetenzen verlangen. Auch aus subjektiver Sicht bietet die Walz viele Bildungsmöglichkeiten, wie sich in der hier dokumentierten und analysierten Befragung von Wandergesellen zu Motiven für die Walz und ihren Bildungseffekten zeigt. Bezüglich der Qualitätsdimensionen beruflicher Bildung wird deutlich, dass die Walz als eine institutionalisierte Form informellen beruflichen Lernens bzw. als immaterielle Bildungseinrichtung einer informellen beruflichen Weiterbildung verstanden werden kann. ; While drawing on theoretical concepts of vocational education, and backed empirically by a survey amongst journeymen, this study describes and analyses both the historical and the present-day journeyman years with a focus on their functions for the vocational training. The historical phenomenon of the journeyman years is still practiced. Despite its deep historical roots, this practice inserts itself into very timely concepts of vocational training, as lifelong and informal learning is increasingly demanded in the context of Europeanization and globalization, and continually advancing professional skills are required. From the subjective point of view of the journeymen, too, the journeyman years offer numerous educational opportunities. The survey amongst journeymen documented and analysed here sheds light on their motives for individual journes, and their educational effects. With regard to the dimensions of vocational training's quality, the journeyman's years emerge as an institutionalized form of informal vocational learning, or as an intangible educational institution of informal vocational training.
