Abstract | This contribution explores the meaning and significance of Community Music (CM) as an Artistic Citizenship (AC) at music universities and music schools. It argues that CM should be introduced as a subject at music universities, with the consequence of a potential expansion of artists' and artist-educators' fields of action. Based on the example of the Ukrainian writer and musician Serhij Zhadans as an artist and community worker, it is shown that experiencing and creating music is an innate capacity for cultural learning and a socially mediated basic ability, whose realisation can contribute to a good life. Based on an understanding that is guided by a compatibility of (socio)cultural work with the guiding principle of artistic excellence, the urgency of empowering CM in the context of higher music education is highlighted.
