Abstract | The chapter aims to provide an interpretive comparison between German and international Bildung related concepts in sport pedagogy. To this end, we first outline central conceptions of Bildung in German-language general pedagogy. Then, against this background, we describe how these are represented in German sport pedagogy and examine how they relate to international sport pedagogical positions. Comparing the two areas requires interpretation because the discussions and results of German-language scholarship only sporadically find their way into international discourses, just as international Bildung research and related approaches have had little influence in German-speaking scholarship. In the final section, we discuss the relationship between Bildung oriented scholarship in the two fields, focusing on how each can benefit from the other. We suggest that German-language discourse would benefit from the elaborate discussion and diverse empirical evidence in the international context. In the opposite direction, dialectical and integrative accounts of Bildung in German sport pedagogy can provide a fruitful alternative to reductionist and instrumental approaches that dominate in Anglo-American literature.
