Abstract | The most important foreign language in Israel is English, which is also widely used in academic papers, in the press, and as a tool in higher education. In Israel, English serves as both a global and a local language in a variety of fields, including business, media, and education, as well as in everyday interactions. English is the language that students are required to read in most academic disciplines; it is frequently peppered in Hebrew oral interactions, particularly among youth in urban areas; it is a language that is widely used in cyberspace and global and high-tech companies, and it is a language that is heard in most films and television programs with translations but no dubbing. Finally, it is a language that all learners must acquire from the beginning of elementary school until the end of secondary school; also, a high level of English is required for admission to higher education institutions. |
