Abstract	Although the concept of Anthropocene has gained attention of scholars across many disciplines, it has remained virtually untouched in nationalism studies and the discussions about the role of education in nation-building. Aiming to address this gap, our chapter explores "literacies of childhood" as a set of discursive constructions that define a relationship between childhood and nation, creating normative boundaries through which possible futures may be envisioned and enacted. Using a decolonial and interdisciplinary approach, the chapter draws on the visual and discourse analysis of 41 early literacy textbooks published in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Latvia since the 1940s. While noting significant shifts during post-Soviet transformations, the analysis concludes that textbooks continue to define the relationship between childhood and nation in terms of promising prosperous and happy futures that must be defended against the external threats, while remaining blind to the impending environmental catastrophe that emanates from within.
