Abstract | The UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) has made a huge step towards the legal anchorage and the sensitisation about the rights of people with disabilities. However; it is criticised that the construct of disability has emerged from an understanding of countries from the Global North and is therefore not contributing to an implementation of effective support services in countries in the Global South. Different economic and politi cal developments compared with historical; social and cultural understandings of human heterogeneity show that disability can be understood and experienced in different manners. Besides the global; programmatic understanding of disability; individualistic manners of understanding the construct of disability must be researched in order to attend a sustainable enhancement of the life's of people with disabilities life's and to create useful requirements for inclusive education. Based on a research project that focusses on the construct of disability in the Manya Krobo Disrict in Ghana; the article presents categories that contribute to an individualistic understand ing of what is meant by disability in this region. |
