Sex education takes place in the conflicted area between the parents' right to educate on the one hand and the educational mandate of the state on the other. The objective of this paper was to elucidate the experiences of parent- and school-based sex education of the German adult population, through a representative sample. In comparisons across age groups, it was investigated whether any sex education has occurred within the educational or family context, which sex-related topics were perceived as important and who were central figures in the learning of sex-related information. Lastly, it was analyzed to what extend the individuals' satisfaction with the provided information was dependent on sociodemographic variables. To that end, the data of the GeSiD-study (The German Health and Sexuality Survey) were investigated: 4,955 individuals, aged 18-75 had completed face-to-face interviews. A two-staged stratified and clustered random sampling design was chosen for participant selection; rate of participation was at 30.2%. The sample shows that, across sample-generations, sex education has strongly increased in both the familial and educational context, with the younger generation of participants rating the quality of sex education more positively. However, it should be noted, that the spectrum of topics discussed in sex education continues to be restricted mainly to aspects of reproduction, while topics such as sexual health, information on different sexual practices, pleasure and sexually transmitted infections are rarely subjects of discussion in the educational context. |
