Abstract | The following article presents the core phenomenon studied in a forthcoming dissertation entitled "Protective Coping - a grounded theory on experiences of discrimination made by professionals in the field of social work". The primary question of this qualitative study was what role experiences of discrimination play in the everyday life of Muslim women engaged in social work. The study's goal was to develop an object-based theory of action in regard to experiences of discrimination. For this purpose, the methodology of Grounded Theory as laid out by Strauss and Corbin was used. A total of nine problem-centred interviews (following Witzel's method) were conducted with social work professionals. Based on the data from these interviews, it was possible to develop a theoretical model of protective coping. This article outlines the core phenomenon of protective coping. For people who have experienced discrimination, this phenomenon arises as soon as they try to cope with the discriminatory situation or to process the experience they had. |
