Abstract | Purpose: Autonomy support in PE impacts students' affective states. This study aims to identify empirical evidence regarding positive influence of autonomy supportive teaching (AST) on affective states. Method: Following PRISMA guidelines, literature in three databases (PsycInfo, Scopus, and ERIC) was searched using the terms affect OR valence OR emotion OR enjoyment AND physical education AND adolescent AND intervention AND autonomy OR self-determination. Results: Ten studies were included in the resulting analysis. TARGET, Teaching Games for Understanding, the Sport Education Programme (SEP) and basic psychological need satisfying (BPNS) exercises are investigated as teaching approaches facilitating the realization of AST styles that positively influence students' affective states. Discussion: This review presents empirical evidence on AST in PE by using these teaching approaches to influence students' affective states. However, the underlying mechanisms governing why these teaching approaches work as AST and how they can be efficiently implemented in PE remain to be investigated. (Autor). |
