Abstract | Health, well-being and psycho-social development in children are closely influenced by their lifestyle. Physical activity (PA) plays a significant role in this interaction. PA has positive effects on cardiovascular and metabolic risk profile, motor abilities and skills, cognitive performance, musculoskeletal health and the prevalence of overweight and obesity (Smith et al., 2014). The higher the levels of PA, the higher the assumed health benefit. In addition, there is evidence that the level of PA at pre-school age has a positive effect on exercise time in adulthood (Telama et al., 2014). Against the background of an increasing digitalization of our living environments, especially of children and young people, activity behaviour can be associated to media usage behaviour in different settings in both a positive and negative way (Manz et al., 2014). The analysis of this relationship creates a basis for determining PA- and health- related needs of promotion and for being able to design future interventions that are appropriate specific for the target group. With this paper the authors suggest and also inspire a more integrative view on this phenomenon as research perspectives derived from exercise science and media science. Especially in the field of health-related PA these two disciplines provide insights into components, preconditions and effects of human behaviour in sports and PA environments. The knowledge about such determinants or outcomes of PA form an important framework to develop and promote pedagogical teaching process and competencies in PA-classes or to define successful health promotion process in interventions with a PA component. This article aims to review the literature of journals in German-speaking countries published between 2017 and early 2019 concerning PA behaviour and media usage behaviour in children and adolescents, interrelations of these variables and possible applications in physical education.
