Abstract | Although there is an obvious tendency in literature classes at the advanced German level to focus on modern texts only, often medieval and early-modern texts can strongly appeal to students. In the paper the author introduces the "Hildebrandslied" as an extreme case for being the oldest text in the history of German literature and yet offering some of the most exciting material for discussions on fundamental aspects concerning all humanity. If read in a modern German translation, the "Hildebrandslied" promises to be the basis for a most successful teaching unit in which students will be able to reflect upon past experiences as a mirror of timeless conflicts between generations.
