| Abstract | The presented discourse about the training of language teachers in German universities aims at combining theoretical knowledge about foreign language teaching and practical skills. There is no doubt that students should become reflective practitioners during their university education, i.e. they must be able to reflect on their own experiences as learners in language classes and, later on, in their teachers training courses. The Portfolio for Language Teachers introduced in the article is a tool that is designed to accompany teachers-in-training from their first semester to their postgraduate studies and far into their professional years, fostering their reflective skills and linking their practical skills to theoretical knowledge. The article explains the purpose of and the requirements for the Portfolio, fitting it into the German university context of teacher education. The article also suggests a research design for the evaluation of such professional portfolios during the first four semesters of teacher training. (Verlag, adapt.). |
