Abstract | Teacher training and education have undergone several changes since 1968. Before that time, teachers were selected by means of exams that asserted their knowledge in a specific discipline. The claim, put forwards in the seventies, for a didactic and pedagogic education brought great changes. The selection of teachers was made in connection with courses on didactic and pedagogical topics and in the final exams didactic and pedagogical skills were asserted. Teachers had to attend the courses both before they were recruited and after starting work in schools. In the spring of 2003 a school reform was passed. As a result, English as a foreign language is progressively introduced in primary schools. This entails the training of primary school teachers in foreign language education. The Italian Ministry of Education has started a large programme, which also includes the use of new technologies, aimed at the qualification of primary school teachers for this new task. (Verlag). |
