| Abstract | In public schools in the French speaking part of Switzerland, German is taught as the first and English as the second foreign language. The paper aims to record the traces that the L2 (German) leaves behind in the written production of the L3 (English) of French-speaking bacheliers (those leaving the 6th form). The transfers attributable exclusively to German occur in all linguistic levels, but concern primarily the lexical and graphemic ones. As a new tool of categorization in cross-linguistic influence, we propose here the term of "doubly supported" interference (doppelgestützte Interferenz) for such cases where a combined, parallel pressure from both L1 and L2 as potential supplier languages affects the production in English as a third language. Empirical evidence shows that such a combined pressure influences above all the syntactic level of the learner English. An explanation for this rather surprising finding is offered in the paper.
