Abstract | In this book chapter, Nicole Welter compares the psychological concept of resilience with the pedagogical concept of Bildung (= self-formation). Both terms and concepts refer to forms of coping with life due to one's own commitment. Even though both stem from different disciplinary traditions, they are almost equally successful in today's scientific reception and everyday discussions. So far, comparative analyses are rare. The focal thesis of this article is that - despite the relative analogy of the constructs - the concept of resilience can neither capture ambivalences "successful" actions may entail nor individual forms of resistance despite difficult living situations. However, the concept of Bildung accomplishes this. A first theoretical part outlines Bildung and resilience as terms and constructions in order to then present similarities and differences in their assumptions about the subject and the composition of human-world-relations. In a second rather exemplary part the constructs are discussed with regards to their explanatory power, especially focusing on the phenomenon of educational climbing as a touchstone. With the help of this example, more specifically through the explanation of practices and results as well as chances and risks of educational climbing, the author examines the capabilities and limits of resilience and Bildung as theoretical frames of reference.
