Abstract | This review examines quantitative studies of informal learning participation and activities including studies of the learning conditions that promote informal learning and studies that explore the nature and types of informal learning. We analyze these studies from the perspective of the Marsick and Watkins (1990) characteristics of informal and incidental learning. We look at how different regions have studied informal learning, compare what we found to four differentiators of informal learning in our model, and draw conclusions about the defining characteristics of informal learning as it has been studied quantitatively. Finally, we identify research gaps we believe warrant further study to extend our knowledge of informal and incidental learning. (DIPF/Orig.). |
