| Abstract | Research into the history of language teaching and learning covers several thousand years; it had its beginnings about 130 years ago. Historical research is based on a wide variety of verbal and non-linguistic sources. These are collected and evaluated on the basis of the relevant research question. The sources are then analysed by way of source criticism, using hermeneutig and discourse analytic procedures. Insights from the analysis of the sources need to be interpreted in the light of the information found in the relevant literature for the time under investigation. Obviously, the existence of sources is the prerequisite for historical research. So far, historical research in the field of language teaching and learning has focused on textbook analysis in order to again information on past practices, on language teaching at certain institutions or on the language learning of particular groups.
