Abstract | Few developmental periods are characterized by so many changes as early adolescence. Early adolescence can be defined as the developmental period between the ages 10-14. During this time, children face the biological transformations of puberty, the educational transition from elementary to middle or secondary school, and the psychological shifts that accompany the emergence of sexuality. With rapid change comes a heightened potential for both positive and negative outcomes, creating important opportunities for school programs to interact with adolescents in a way that fosters growth and development. This paper summarizes twelve research studies that explore gender attitudes during early adolescence, and the implications of these attitudes for physical educators. The review shows that adolescents' gender attitudes appear influenced by individual characteristics such as biological sex and puberty, interpersonal influences - namely family and peers, and cultural influences - the school and society.
