(DIPF/Orig.). A general model of teachers' professional competencies is derived from the development of theoretical models in this research area on the basis of important steps of the development, and perspectives for further theoretical and empirical steps of development are outlined. The steps (1) action patterns of successful teachers, (2) stereotyping of students as units of cognitive representation, (3) complex concept- and belief systems, (4) action control functions of the knowledge systems, (5) component models of knowledge-bases, skill-domains, and effect-spheres, (6) context- and domain specific differentiations, (7) development and acquisition processes of competencies, (8) socially constructed parts of the basis for action can partly be considered as cumulative, i. e. today, the models are still valid in their approach and can be differentiated for further demands and domains of teachers' professional competencies. With regard to the design of teacher education, two questions arise: the first concerns the relationship and the role of knowledge and action in learning processes for complex professional demands; the second concerns the relationship of implicit and explicit knowledge bases of professional performance and problem-solving.
