| Abstract | Transition is a major keyword in pedagogic debates, particularly when language learning is concerned. Germany's school system requires pupils to change schools at least twice during the learning process. In early foreign language learning, the two most important transitions occur from the elementary level to primary school and from primary school to the secondary level. While pupils are challenged to learn in a new educational context, teachers are asked to build on the competence language learners have already acquired. This article focusses on the aspect of transition in early foreign language learning. It illustrates the challenges, chances, necessities and possibilities that still have to be acknowledged in order to make foreign language learning a continuous process. It focusses specifically on both the rising field of foreign language learning in kindergarden as well as on ongoing debates about the more developed and researched transition from the primary to the secondary level.
