Abstract | This review article is based on research articles in several scientific journals published in German over the past two years (January 2015 to December 2016). The reviewed articles are divided into two categories: one with a focus on professionalization of physical education teachers, the other with a focus on instructional aspects in physical education. The articles with a focus on professionalization of physical education teachers were analysed with regard to their content in relation to the current topics in physical education teacher education and general aspects of the physical education teacher profession. The articles with a leaning towards instructional aspects were analysed on trends and research topics in physical education which are of particular importance in the current discussion within the scientific community and thereby relevant for physical education teacher education as well. Thirteen articles published in the journals Sportpädagogik, Sportunterricht, Sportwissenschaft, and Zeitschrift für Sportpädagogische Forschung with a focus on topics in connection with physical education teacher professionalization are analysed first in three sections: (1) Initial training of physical education teachers, (2) Professionalization of physical education teachers and (3) Professional stress of physical education teachers. In the following, five aspects will be outlined in five sections bringing together 28 articles in the journals Bewegung & Sport, Sportpädagogik, Sportunterricht, Sportwissenschaft, Zeitschrift für Sportpädagogische Forschung, and Zeitschrift für Sportpsychologie, and thus providing an overview on some current trends and orientations in physical education didactics: (1) Learning and teaching in physical education, (2) Inclusion in physical education, (3) Students in physical education, (4) Theory and reflective practice in physical education and (5) Use of motor tests in physical edication.
