Abstract	The beginning of college life is a difficult period of transit for students both in traditional and distance studies. However, many achieve the expected academic performance. The aim of this paper is to analyze the goals and motivational profiles of a group of students who managed to regularize the subjects prescribed by the curriculum they were pursuing careers. Study participants were 85 students in traditional mode and 14 students in virtual mode. The data were collected by administering a self-report questionnaire. The results show prevalence of learning goals among subjects in traditional mode while among virtual students the most prominent goal is to avoid failure. The discussion highlights the contextual dimension of motivation, suggesting actions that can promote motivation for learning.
