(DIPF/Orig.). In Austria, the decision between the non-academic track of teacher education and the academic track of teacher education for teaching in (high) schools is as a decision for the school-level to teach in the future closely linked to the selection of a university or pedagogical college as an education institution for the education of teachers. The teacher education at these two different institutions differs in terms of admission and selection procedure, structures, contents and duration as well as the future teaching positions after graduation which differ in terms of reputation in the society and monetary earnings. On the basis of an Austrian sample of n = 1342 pre-service teachers who study at pedagogical colleges and universities, we examine the importance of cognitive and motivational admission requirements for the decision of the school-level to teach in the future in the Austrian education of teachers. The results show that the probability of belonging to either a pedagogical college or a university can be explained by motivational predictors as well as pedagogical experiences before the studies and the tested pedagogical (pre-) knowledge but only to a small extent by generic cognitive attributes.
