The notion of collocation appears to be imprecise due to different senses ascribed to it in British and American traditional linguistics and studies of English resulting from it on the one hand, and in studies of languages other than English on the other. Additionally, it has different sense in linguistics, lexicography and foreign language teaching (FLT). Within last sixty years two separate perspectives have emerged: one perspective is wide, frequency-based and grounded in corpus linguistics, the other is a narrow, semantic perspective. The objective of this paper is an attempt to answer the question which perspective is the most fruitful for FLT methodology. The paper has the following structure. First, the two perspectives on collocation are presented and arguments for their application are juxtaposed. Next, the characteristics of collocation relevant for FLT are identified. The main part of the paper proposes an understanding of the notion of collocation such that it incorporates the process of learning and acquiring foreign vocabulary, which means a notion most relevant for FLT methodology. |
