(DIPF/Orig.). The article systematically discusses motives to introduce all-day schools in Germany and outlines their implementation in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) according to this background. Compared to other federal states, in NRW the upgrade of primary schools (all-day school in an open model) was launched before that of secondary schools (all-day school in a bound model). The widespread comprehensive schools in NRW have been structured as all-day schools from the beginning. Furthermore findings from research on all-day schools were presented and discussed in light of challenges in the cooperation between teaching and other pedagogic or non-pedagogic staff.
