| Abstract | When Dave Eggers' dystopian novel "The Circle" was first published in the fall of 2013, it struck a nerve: a few months previously, the NSA surveillance scandal publicized by Edward Snowden had triggered a heated debate about privacy in the digital sphere. In the novel, Stanford graduate Mae accepts a job offer from the world's leading digital technologies corporation "Circle". The company runs a social network of billions of users worldwide, which is based on the idea of making more and more areas of its members' everyday and private life transparent to other users. Since most adolescents use at least one social network and share pictures and personal data online, the novel tackles problems that are highly relevant to students of the advanced EFL classroom. It can be therefore recommended for a classroom sequence on utopian and dystopian visions of society. |
