| Abstract | While English is the most popular foreign language in Germany and a compulsory subject in the curriculum, Italian, an optional subject, occupies the sixth position in the hierarchy of foreign languages being taught in public schools. As a matter of fact, Italian is most often studied as a third (L4) or fourth (L5) foreign language. Thanks to the growing interest in the way previously learned non-native languages influence the acquisition of an additional language, we know today that L3, L4, L5 learners have language specific knowledge and competencies at their disposal that L2 learners do not. However, in many classrooms, languages are still taught without any reference to each other. The main purpose of this paper is therefore to illustrate that the interaction between English and Italian can lead to positive transfer and that English, although it is not part of the family of Romance languages, can take over the role of a bridge language to Italian.
