| Abstract | After the victory of Ukip in the recent Rochester by-election, Emily Thornberry, a Labour MP, posted a photography of a house in Rochester draped with English flags and with a white van standing outside. These images are associated in the minds of some liberal British people with right-wing, xenophobic, narrow-minded and aggressive supporters of Ukip. Thornberry was accused of being a snob and an elitist and was forced to resign after her tweet was received by a public outcry and outrage, also articulated via Twitter. The incident raised a lot of questions about how the social media can be used to instigate public shaming of a kind unknown, at least in the western democracies. Two articles from the "Guardian" are intended to complement each other: the first gives some background information on the Thornberry case and the second is an extract from a review of John Ronson's book: "So You Have Been Publicly Shamed", which raises the issue of the morality of public shaming people who have been severely criticised for articulating views or posting messages that have somehow been offensive to other people. |
