Abstract | The article reviews recent developments in the promotion of sport through various policy instruments emanating from European political institutions, as well as other vested organizations. The work methodically lays out the efforts of, among others, the European Union, the Eurydice study, a Declaration from the UNESCO World Conference of Ministers of Physical Education and Sport, the new Erasmus objectives, the Council of Europe, and the European Physical Education Association. The article demonstrates how the above initiatives, albeit independent from each other, converge to promote physical activity and the instruction of physical education in school settings. The work is evidence of a critical mass of attention being paid towards the importance of physical activity and proper physical education. The article demonstrates this increasing interest not only by noting the number of initiatives, but also by underlining the important variety of sources of initiatives. Finally, the article makes special mention of the specific wording or sections of the various declarations, proposals, or documents that go beyond focusing on health to specifically address the issue of physical education in schools.
