| Abstract | This paper traces the development of the concept of language awareness (LA) from its origins to the present day. It is shown that the concept of LA, characterized by vagueness right from the beginning, has experienced a further loss of focus and precision by way of extending its meaning to include (intercultural) communicative awareness and awareness of multilingualism and multilingual settings, and at the same time referring to additional groups of people as subjects of LA. It is argued that in spite of the theoretical, terminological and empirical problems associated with the concept of LA, reflection on language and language use will continue to be a relevant issue in theory and practice of foreign language teaching - even though the ability to use languages for communication will remain the primary goal.
