Abstract | Explored the relationship between satisfaction of teachers' basic psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence and their self-reported levels of teaching-related engagement, emotions, and emotional exhaustion within a self-determination theory (SDT) framework. A 2-component model tested teachers' need for relatedness with students and with colleagues. A total of 1,049 teachers (aged 20-70 years) in Canada participated in 3 studies. In Study 1 (n = 409), perceptions of autonomy support and their association with teachers' relatedness with colleagues and students were examined, as well as how relatedness subsequently predicted teaching engagement and emotional exhaustion. In Study 2 (n = 455), a full SDT model tested the hypothesis that perceptions of autonomy support lead to satisfaction of teachers' needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness with colleagues and students, which in turn affect their engagement and emotional expression (anxiety, anger, enjoyment). In Study 3 (n = 185), scenarios tested participants' beliefs about 2 hypothetical teachers: the first with high student and low peer relatedness and the other with low student and high peer relatedness. Results from the 3 studies consistently supported the finding that for teachers, satisfying the need for relatedness with students led to higher levels of engagement and positive emotions and lower levels of negative emotions than satisfying the need for relatedness with peers.
