| Abstract | This review article is based on several scientific journals published in German over the past two years (January 2010 to December 2011). All articles were published in the journals 'Bewegungserziehung', 'Sportpädagogik', 'Sportpraxis', 'Zeitschrift für Sportpsychologie', 'Sportwissenschaft', 'Spectrum der Sportwissenschaft', 'Ze-phir', and 'Sportunterricht' in the respective period and related to physical education or school sport were taken into account for the present review article. A classification divided the reviewed articles into two categories: one with a more practical, the other with a more theoretical focus. Where articles could not be clearly assigned to either category, the appropriate articles were assigned to both. Following this first distinction, both categories were then subjected to another classification. The articles with a practical focus were analysed with regard to the content in relation to the current physical education curricula (allocation to the respective sport disciplines and/or theme fields/movement fields) The articles with a leaning towards theory were analysed on trends and research topics in physical education (PE) which are of particular importance in the current discussion within the scientific community.
