Abstract | Multicultural classrooms are a logical consequence of European unification in a fast globalising world. In consequence, differences in language competences of pupils surface itself in a daily teaching practice. These differences are probably most problematic in literature courses. However, we also expect problems in more subject based courses, since literacy competences are useful in reception and production of all kinds of information. In the first part of this contribution a model of linguistic interaction in a socially diverse teaching context is presented. Then the notion of language competences is elaborated further for literacy skills, knowledge and experiences in a school context. Finally, the findings of a needs analysis survey among teacher in the Netherlands is presented. (Verlag, adapt.). |
