Abstract | As the world's population continues to grow, Germany's population numbers are decreasing, and the number of its old people is on the rise. According to the latest projections, Germany is expected to shrink by some 17 million inhabitants by 2060. By then, every third German will be over the age of 65. This means major changes for German society. The educational system must be reoriented as young people become fewer. Health care for Germany's aging population calls for new ideas. And as the working world increasingly depends on older employees, society's conceptions of age will change. One thing is clear: where people join forces and tackle this development, even cities and communities with vacant buildings can remain sustainable places to live. (HoF/text adopted). |
