Abstract | This essay gives an overview of major trends in textbook research in the subjects of history, geography, and social studies since the year 2000. Alongside five major themes - textbook revision, collective patterns of interpretation and the construction of identities, methodological issues, the relationship between textbooks and society, and the theory and history of educational media - the essay ascertains, that textbook research does not yet exist as a specific academic field. A high research output and a methodological plurality contrast to low institutional basis in universities and other academic institutions. The main deficit of the present textbook-related research - and this has not changed much over the past decades - can be seen in the lack of empirical findings on the usage, reception, and effects of textbooks in the classroom and a widespread a theoretical approach to textbook analysis. However, there is a growing interest in textbooks and other educational media, reflected by a variety of research on textbooks conducted from different disciplinary perspectives. (DIPF/Orig.). |
