| Abstract | The offered short story by James Joyce is taken from his ground-breaking selection entitled "Dubliners"," published in 1914. The collection itself gives a cross-section of Dublin characters at the turn of the 20th century. Joyce's scheme was to show people at various stages of life between childhood and maturity. In "Dubliners" Joyce examines themes that were to occupy him in all of his fictional works: the three nets of family, nation and religion. Eveline's own particular net is the family - she is responsible for keeping the family, consisting of her father and her two younger siblings, together. All of this, of course, is too much for her and on top of that she has met a pleasant young man, Frank, who wants to marry her and take her off to a new life in Argentina. In the end, she stays behind, torn between her duties and desires, her personality almost destroyed. (Verlag, adapt.). |
