Abstract | Assessments of student learning and qualifications are an expanding world-wide phenomenon in education, training and on-going professional development. At the same time, the meaning and application of "assessment" and "qualification" in the education and employment domains need to being questioned in an attempt to inculcate clarity of use of these terms, as well as significance and appreciation of formal and informal assessments and qualifications. During the last AO years, the shift towards more formal processes of conducting and recording assessments in physical education has been ongoing, yet the functions of formal and informal modes of assessment have not been interpreted equivocally by professionals and employers in teaching, coaching and training. Teachers and those involved in delivering courses in physical education and sport have been professionally challenged since they have been channelled to retain recreation, academic, examinations and vocational roles within physical education and sport (PE&S). For the purpose of this chapter, the domains of PE&S include areas of study leading to qualifications for jobs and professions in physical education, sport coaching, exercise, health and fitness and sports management. Commencing with an overview of European and other infrastructures of national qualifications frameworks, this chapter addresses a series of inter-related issues in qualifications and assessments and indicates how the task of implementing assessments and awarding qualifications may be approached. The focus of discussion including clarification of terms surrounding assessments and qualifications is the emergence, nature and role of assessment within national and European Qualifications Frameworks and the routes to academic, vocational and other qualifications in PE&S. The principles, purposes and modes of assessments are revisited with an emphasis on the implications for PE&S domains. It is argued that although assessment opportunities should be incorporated in learning experiences, particular attention should be paid to the planning, conducting and recording of assessments and the generation of qualifications. The intention is to identify areas of controversy and consensus regarding issues of assessment and qualifications worldwide, and in so doing, to provide knowledge and evidence for the formulation of improved applications of assessments and qualifications frameworks.
