Abstract | The concept of competence has emerged as a key issue in political and scholarly debates, as well as in discussions about educational practice. It is competing with concepts such as education, learning, qualification, and human capital, and has thus gained popularity as an international phenomenon. The book provides a well-defined terminology and a concise overview of the most important lines of discussion. The author goes over a debate that originated in vocational education and training, and explores its potential for adult education. He refines the concept of competence by looking at it from an adult education point of view and by offering a variety of examples. In addition, the book will provide practitioners with both basic knowledge of a complex theoretical concept and empirical substance based on practical experiences and instruments. (DIPF/Orig.). |
