Abstract	In this paper [the author] explore[s] the relationship between education and social capital in the context of the ageing of many of the world's populations, including almost all European countries. This major demographic trend requires a fresh approach to lifelong learning. [The author] present[s] a new model for the structuring of the educational lifecourse, drawing on work carried out as a part of a UK enquiry into the future of lifelong learning. [He] present[s] the case for analysing the distribution of learning opportunities by four different age groups, but [he] also argue[s] that learning provides important bonds between different generations.
