| Abstract | In the early 19th century literal translation was established by James Hamilton as the central technique of an "analytical" method of language teaching. This technique was conceived as a means of approaching the conceptual forms of foreign languages via the mother tongue. In Germany, however, it was most commonly practised only in conjunction with translation by sense. Thus the "double traduction", which was given its theoretical basis by Du Marsais and Radonvilliers in 18th century Latin teaching in France, was further developed in Germany in the teaching of modern languages. In addition to new variants of semantisation based on the mother tongue, this led to an intensive theoretical discussion of meaning in language and its comprehensibility, which was strongly influenced by idealist linguistic philosophy. In the last quarter of the 20th century, the traditional "multiple" translation was modified in the bilingual method propagated in Germany by Wolfgang Butzkamm by combining it with the principles of communicative language teaching.
