(DIPF/Orig.). Following Festinger's theory of social comparison processes and the empirical results of the big-fish-little-pond-effect this part of the PERLE study analyses the effect of the class mathematical performance and the class mathematical heterogeneity on the development of elementary students' mathematical self-concept. The results show the early existence of the big-fish-little-pond-effect in the first and second grade. For the second grade the strength of the big-fish-little-pond-effect is moderated by the class heterogeneity: In classes with low heterogeneity in performance the big-fish-little-pond-effect is smaller.
