| Abstract | The activity 'mediation' is currently gaining ground in foreign language classes. This is due to the fact that it is part of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and that it has been integrated in National Educational Standards (Bildungsstandards). Furthermore, it has been incorporated in curricula for foreign language learning. In the paper, the author focuses on potential specifics of strategy instruction and application that lies in mediation tasks. For this reason, the article presents the different strategies that can be taught by applying mediation tasks, including an example for ELE (Español como Lengua Extranjera). Finally, the author argues that there is an urgent need for more empirical research committed to the potential and impact of tasks such as mediation, which, among other things, explicitly includes the mother tongue in the foreign language classroom.
