(DIPF/Orig.). Social equality has been one of the heritages left by the Enlightenment to its succeeding generations as a fundamental value as well as an aim of social change. The current debate has been caused by features of regression putting a stop to the progressive development up to recently. In the sociological debate this change of the trend is mirrored by the opposition of two structural dimensions representing the 'old' theory of social inequality and its 'young' counterpart in form of the theory of functional differentiation. The present article concentrates on the manifestations of social inequality in the European reality and their impacts on the education systems. The inclusion of Central and Eastern Europe in the recent trend is given special attention by an excursion into the topical debate on how to cope with social inequality. (DIPF/Orig.). |
