Abstract | The book examines the alignment side of curriculum alignment. The first four chapters review the alignment research around three major areas: instruction, textbooks, and tests. ... In Part II, the authors extend their investigation into the curriculum part of curriculum alignment by examining curriculum systems such as mastery learning, Project 2061 for science and mathematics, and the research findings from a portion of the TIMSS ... Together these curriculum systems demonstrate that the way curriculum is structured and organized has an effect on student performance. Part III opens by investigating a definition of curriculum that includes alignment and poses ten criteria for a useful and usable curriculum that specifically incorporates aspects of alignment. [Then] the authors explore how the Balanced Curriculum (one way to structure curriculum while taking in many of alignment's aspects) meets the proposed definition of curriculum and meets the ten criteria for a useful and usable curriculum. This section demonstrates that appropriately structured curriculum is one way to capture alignment's power to improve student performance. (DIPF/Orig.). |
