Abstract	"Im Forschungsfeld der politischen Partizipation wird angenommen, dass sich erstens die Ausstattung mit ökonomischem und Humankapital, zweitens politische Einstellungen (insbesondere das politische Interesse) und drittens das Sozialkapital positiv auf die politische Beteiligung von Menschen und damit auch positiv auf die Demokratie auswirken kann. Überlegungen seit den 1990er Jahren zur Bedeutung der zivilgesellschaftlichen Einbindung von Menschen am Gelingen von Demokratie haben dazu geführt, auch dem Erklärungsfaktor Sozialkapital wieder besondere Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen. Für europäische Länder wird anhand von Umfragedaten des 'European Social Survey' von 2002/2003 empirisch getestet, inwieweit sich insbesondere Indikatoren des Sozialkapitals auf die Beteiligung an unterschiedlichen elektoralen und nicht elektoralen politischen Partizipationsformen auswirken. Ergebnisse dieser Analysen zeigen, dass derartige Effekte weitgehend gefunden werden können. Jedoch erweisen sie sich bei differenzierter Betrachtung je nach Partizipationsform unterschiedlich. Insbesondere ein intensives Engagement in Vereinigungen und Vereinen als Aspekt des strukturellen Sozialkapitals wirkt in der Gesamtbetrachtung positiv auf die politische Beteiligung." (Autorenreferat). Die Untersuchung enthält quantitative Daten. Die Untersuchung bezieht sich auf den Zeitraum 2002 bis 2003. "In the field of political participation research we assume that there are three aspects that influence political participation: (1) the individual position within social inequality structures, with respect to endowment in economic and human capital, (2) political attitudes (especially interest in politics) and (3) individual social capital. It is assumed that all aspects have a positive impact on the different forms of political participation and ultimately, on democracy itself. Using data from the European Social Survey 2002/2003, hypotheses are being tested empirically in 20 European countries; it is specifically tested to see to what extent these explanatory factors and social capitals, affect involvement in different electoral and non electoral forms of political participation. The results show that those effects can be found for the most part to distinguish between different forms of participation. This is particularly true in the aspects of the individual social capital. But those effects seem to be rather notable with respect to certain forms of political participation: civic engagement in voluntary organizations as an aspect of structural social capital, which surprisingly seems to have a positive impact on political participation."
