Abstract | It is shown that newspaper discourse is a communicative event and an attempt is made to come up with a communication model that explains newspaper discourse and that makes it possible to identify the presence of bias in all parts of this communication process (chapter 2). The idea that bias is inevitable in news production is explored (chapter 3). It is then shown that readers are not merely passive sponges that soak up information, but are instead powerful actors that can influence newspaper discourse, which they, to different extents, always make use of (chapter 4).
